presented by LEV, MASS MoCA, Mass Humanities, Multicultural Bridge

MASS MoCA hosts a screening of the award-winning documentary, James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, by filmmaker Karen Thorsen, who will participate in a talkback after the screening. Using archival footage, newsreel clips, and interviews with writers Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, Ishmael Reed, William Styron, and biographer David Leeming, the film captures the passionate intellect and courageous writing of a man self-described as “born Black, impoverished, gay, and gifted.” James Baldwin was an outspoken voice for human rights and an end to African American degradation in America. The film is a restored HD version of the original 16mm film, a co-production from Maysles Films and PBS/American Masters. (1989, 87 min.)
